Golden Shoe Hunt

The 13th Annual Golden Shoe Hunt will have you exploring the regional and community parks in electoral areas A to H, to find the hidden shoe. Clues and instructions for the locations of the shoes will be posted weekly to rdn.bc.ca/recreation, RDN Facebook, Twitter and Instagram until May 17th.

 

Twoonie Teen Swim

Youth Week

Youth week is a national celebration of youth held annually May 1 to 7. It is a week of interaction and celebration intended to build a strong connection between young people and their communities. FREE Youth Week Teen Swim

Celebrate Youth week at Ravensong Aquatic Centre with a free swim. Youth 13 to 18 years can celebrate with a wild, wet and active swim with friends. Friday, May 3rd from 7:00-9:00 pm. Free admission. The Great Garage Sale

Clean out that attic and sell no longer needed items at the Great Garage Sale. Oceanside Place Arena will be transformed into a giant flea market with lots of room for those wonderful treasures to find new homes with the hundreds of buyers that wander the aisles. Mount Horne Guided Hike

Embarking on this hike from the spectacular Cathedral Grove, this tour will take you through both man-made and natural elements that remind us of the history of the area. The scenic climb ends with a rocky scramble to the top of the bluff where you can see out to Mount Arrowsmith Massif and the Alberni Inlet. Depart from Ravensong Aquatic Centre on Saturday, May 4th at 8:00 am. $49 per person. Hike intensity rating is 2 stars: long stretches of steady incline and steep terrain. Parks 101 Tour – Moorecroft Regional Park

An RLC Park Naturalist will show you the trails, unique aspects, and opportunities in some of the region’s best natural areas.  This tour is great for both newcomers and those who are familiar but maybe haven’t fully explored our local RDN Parks and Trails. She’s in Nature Guided Hike – Nile Creek

Nile Creek is approximately six km winding forest trail through large maples, fir and cedar, mostly near a salmon spawning stream. The trail ends with a sequence of several high falls twisting through a narrow gorge. Walking poles are helpful in some uphill areas. Wednesday, May 8th from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. $18 per person. Science Spotlight Kids’ Workshop

Experiment with your child and explore the wonder of science. What will happen when we mix baking soda and vinegar? Is that volcano going to erupt? Sea Lion Kayak Tour

The California sea lions make the Oceanside area their home from October to May. Register in this kayak tour and paddle past their haul-out and watch as they cavort and fish in the local waters.  These tours are perfect for beginners and include kayak gear and instruction. Geology Tour

Join Dr Steven Earle for an interpretive geology tour on the beaches of Nanoose Bay. Learn simple identification techniques and a bit about the island’s geological history. Transportation will be provided from your choice of either Oceanside Place Arena at 9:00 am or Nanoose Place at 9:30 am. This tour is on Thursday, May 16th from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. School’s Out Everyone Welcome Swim

Stay active on your day off from school with a swim at Ravensong Aquatic Centre. The lifeguards will have the toys out for a splashing good time. Friday, May 17th from 1:00 to 2:30 pm. Red Cross Emergency First Aid with AED/CPR

Be prepared and get trained in first aid skills. Training includes home hazards, accident prevention, safety education, CPR, first aid skills for common emergencies and automated external defibrillators (AED). Retraining is recommended every three years. Qualicum Commons, on Friday, May 17th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, cost is $89. For ages 14-19 years. Mount Benson Regional Park Guided Hike

Start your journey up the mountain on the floating boardwalk at Witchcraft Lake. Climb steadily up a rough forest trail to the peak and be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Nanaimo, Sunshine Coast and Washington State. Transportation provided from Oceanside Place Arena to the trailhead. Hike intensity rating is 2 star: long stretches of steady incline and steep terrain. Saturday, May 18th, 8:00 am start. Splish Splash Everyone Welcome Swim

Splish splash everyone welcome swims at Ravensong Aquatic Centre are a water adventure you don’t want to miss. The lifeguards are going to bring out the pool toys for everyone to enjoy. Hiking Information Session

Have you ever wanted to explore some of the area’s beautiful mountains? A local alpine guide shares tips and resources for family adventures and avid hikers. Ask questions before heading out on our guided hikes or self-guided exploration in Regional Parks. Get advice on clothing, equipment and route planning to help you stay safe and enjoy the outdoors. Note: This course is MANDATORY for all new participants in the Alpine Hikes. The session is on Wednesday, May 22nd from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Oceanside Place Arena and the cost is $14 per person. She’s in Nature Guided Hike – Bonnell Creek Falls

It’s all about the destination here as you will stumble upon scenic waterfalls nestled in the quiet Nanoose Bay area. The trail is approximately six km, with steep descents assisted by a rope to view the falls. This hike can be steep and challenging in places for an inexperienced hiker. Paddle Canada Sea Kayak for Beginners

This full-day basic sea kayaking course, jam-packed full of information and time on the water, builds a solid foundation in the fun sport of paddling. No experience necessary. Certified instructor, kayak, gear and in-depth hand-out are included. Certificate awarded upon successful completion. Sunday, May 26th from 8:15 am to 5:30 pm at Horne Lake Regional Park. Qualicum Beach Family Day Free Swim

Sunday, May 26th is Family Day in Qualicum Beach.  Enjoy a free swim at Ravensong Aquatic Centre 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.  Everyone is welcome to this free swim as part of the Family Day activities.  Maximum capacity is 160 swimmers.
